OPENING QUESTION:  

Although there are no longer any American companies making commercial jet aircraft, there most certainly IS another company that competes head-to-head with Boeing.

Who are they?

What kinds of planes do they build?

How successful are they?

It may also interest you to know that up until the merger with McDonnel Douglas in the 1990's that Boeing was famous for its engineers. They typically promoted their top engineers to top management jobs and engineer was a top priority when producing their planes.

Soooo... by the late 1990's Boeing was unchallenged in the world selling their aircraft for 100's of millions of dollars (each) - and they sold a LOT of airplanes every year.

 

However, back in the 1970's and 1980's a group of European countries (The UK, France, Germany and Spain - I think, please check me on that!) got together to form Airbus Industrie.

  • Why do you suppose they did that?

How is that company different from Boeing?

It may interest you to know that there emerged a huge rivalry and controversy between Boeing and Airbus:

Boeing said it wasn't fair that they had to compete with a company (Airbus) that was suported up by several different foreign governments.

Airbus said that Boeing had a fairly massive military aircraft business that sold aircraft to the US Government that acted like a huge government support.

And so it has gone!
